Lesson Learned - FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCTS!

Lesson Learned - FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCTS!

SO, I know I’ve been MIA-ish. Sorry ‘bout that. For the first time since bringing them home, one of my babies is sick. And maybe two now. But not yet three. I’m holding my breath and praying.

I know I’ve mentioned puking and stuff like that before, but no-one was ever actually sick. It was more like they played too hard and got all worked up and then BARFED all over my carpet and walls and toys and themselves. You get the picture.

And anytime I was afraid that someone had a cold, it turned out to be nothing and went away as soon as it came. Allergies? Likely, since those times were around days that were very windy.

I, myself, have been really sick TWICE. Both times, we managed to keep the babies protected and they stayed healthy.

Anyway, this is the first time that I’ve actually had a sick baby. Horrible chest congestion, coughing, runny nose, sneezing, FUSSINESS…the poor thing is miserable.
I feel horrible. And I am so frustrated with myself.

As you may know, we have chosen to be RSV isolators during the RSV seasons in their first two years (maybe three) of life. Basically, what that means is once RSV season starts, we keep the babies pretty isolated, especially from anyone who’s been sick recently AND from school age kids. We are fortunate to be living in Southern California and RSV season didn’t really officially start here this year until January.

For some reason, RSV isolation is a somewhat controversial issue. People have strong opinions about the babies' immunity, which I find interesting because these are not their children. We (along with our pediatrician) believe our kids get the immunity they need from us and the people they are exposed to. Some people take our isolation personally. This frustrates me, but what can I do? We don’t isolate from everyone, just those who are in a high risk group or people whose children are school age or whose children attend group daycare…or whatever the case may be.

I could go into the whole explanation about the fact that even though they look “normal” (whatever that means), they were still 31 WEEK PREEMIES and MULTIPLES whose lungs development was not that of babies born full term and that until they are older their lungs are still more vulnerable to the dangers of respiratory illnesses for the first few of years of their lives. Bla bla bla. Oh wait, I guess I did just go into it. Nevermind. Basically, we decided that isolation during RSV season was the choice we were going to make for OUR family.

That leads me to why I am frustrated with myself: I didn’t follow my instincts. I ignored that little voice.

Last weekend there was a first birthday party for the son of a family friend. I was a little hesitant since the weather was COLD and some bad viruses have been going around. There was a recent spike in RSV activity.

I still RSVPed “yes”. I really wanted to go. The family whose baby’s birthday we were celebrating was going back to Germany where they live (they were just here to visit family/friends) and we knew our kids wouldn’t see each other for a long time. Also, we hadn’t seen some of our friends in a while (not since the Triplets’ Tol/birthday party but we didn’t get a chance to really talk to anyone) and we wanted to be normal. I wanted to be normal. Excuses aside, I knew better.

The night before the party I was really having second thoughts. My gut was bugging me. I told Brian, “Maybe we shouldn’t go. The weather is bad (it was rainy). People are sick. We are right in the middle of an RSV spike…”

But I really wanted to go. Soooo…even though my instincts told me, “NO!” I shushed them and went anyway. My justification? The party was outside. Outside is much safer than inside, right? And…they’re not newborns like last year. That’s a big difference!

We went, we had fun. It was nice visiting with friends. I loved seeing everyone and sharing our babies with family friends. I noticed a couple of sniffling coughers. I tried to ignore it. We went home and went on with the weekend.

Two days later the fussiness and coughing began. Now, I’ve got a full blown sick baby and one showing some signs of joining him (coughing has started).

Having one sick baby is hard enough. I am exhausted. But I asked for it! I have done this to myself. I have done this to my babies. Lesson learned. I am mad at myself though. I am praying that things improve quickly but they seem to be getting worse before getting better. So, I admit I am freaking out a bit. They cannot all get sick!

I am already exhausted this week from ONE sick baby.
I cannot afford three co-pays for doctor’s visit.
God forbid we end up having to do breathing treatments.
I am such an idiot.

OK, so GET OVER IT and SHUTUP and SNAP OUT OF IT. I get it. I realize that everything will be fine and its not the end of the world.

Can you tell that I am hard on myself?

Can we move on to good news? Guess who cut a tooth? Her FIRST tooth. ALEXIS!

Current tooth count:

Alexis: 1
Zachary: 8
Jackson: 7

It’s the cutest little bitty tooth. My itty bitty baby girl has a tooth!

I just re-read this and it is clear that I need an attitude adjustment. I need to get out of the house or something.

In the meantime, check out these photos of my cute babies. They make me happy. I should just keep looking at pictures tonight and get over myself.

Or maybe I should do some laundry.

We really did enjoy our time at the party and it was wonderful seeing family friends.
You MUST see this cute video of our babies enjoying Luke's birthday cake! I love them so much it hurts. I could watch video of them all day long. But then, who would put away the laundry?

MARVEL at my amazing camerawork. Don't laugh, BTW. This was one handed.

Just before finishing this post, found out that Tuesday passed away today. My heart is broken. I cannot imagine the pain Tuesday's family is experiencing. Please join me in continuing to pray for Tuesday's family.

CHOO CHOO!

CHOO CHOO!

OHMYGOSH, there's so much to update you with but I'll just have to give you a quickie. First of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR! On New Years Day it is Korean tradition to gather and celebrate and to eat rice cake soup. Actually, Lunar New Year isn't until January 26 this year, but we celebrate on January 1st every year.
This year, it was just our immediate family and my parents and sister and her boyfriend Aaron. We ate soup and played games after the babies went down for the evening. But before dinner, we took them out for their first ride in their Christmas present from my parents...a CHOO CHOO WAGON! Let me tell you, Brian and I were SO excited to take them for a ride. Even since I found out I was pregnant with triplets, I have imagined taking our babies out in one of these! Thankfully, my parents sprung for the gift and it was so much fun to take the babies for a ride. They really enjoyed it!

Brian made this video...hilarious sound efffect!

We've since taken them out during the daytime and they seemed to enjoy it even more. We are going to get lots of use out of this bad boy. Brian and I enjoy it as much as the babies! :)

Also, We've got more teeth people! Jackson has popped more top teeth. That makes the count:

Alexis: 0
Zachary: 8
Jackson: 6

Alexis is still holding out. No worries, she's taking her time :)

Since their first birthday, we've switched from formula to milk, which has been a HUGE savings! NO MORE FORMULA. I can hardly believe it. I mean, milk is really expensive, but nowhere NEAR as expensive as formula was. I don't know how we actually made it this past year with the formula expenses. It has been unreal.

Also, we've dropped from four bottles to ONE. I am dropping that last one next week. I didn't want to waste any time because I knew it was just a matter of time before they got too attached to them for me to do it without a fight. I do NOT want to make things any harder than they need to be so I was eager to start the transition before their first birthday. I immediately dropped two bottle feedings (in exchange for sippy cups) cold turkey right before Thanksgiving. Then we dropped the morning bottle. Now we're left with the bedtime bottle which will be gone after next week! WOO HOO - no more bottles! I can't even believe my little babies will not need bottles anymore. Its actually kinda sad for me. All this time spent with so many bottle feedings and now they're big babies.
:(
But really, I am happy because its so much easier. I LOVE sippy cups. There was a little resistance at first and it took some time for me to find a cup that all three of them like but now we're cool and I am so relieved. PHEW!

What else? Well Zachary is walking now. Not exclusively, but he's slowly gaining confidence and gets to chasing Jackson around. And speaking of Jackson, that boy is practically running all over. Its SOOOO cute. He's pretty much stopped crawling altogether. Its wild to see my babies walking. I am in awe over how quickly they've grown. Alexis has taken a couple steps here and there but doesn't seem too interested in walking anytime soon. That's fine with me babygirl - on your own time!

The babies have two doctor's appointments next week (one with the pediatrician and one with the opthalmologist) so I'll have stats to update you with then. Until then...CHOO CHOO!

A Quick Update - AND MORE TEETH!

A Quick Update - AND MORE TEETH!

So as it turns out I am SICK. Like Nyquil and lotion tissues and all that good stuff. Except...Mommies don't really get sick days. Babies still need to eat and stuff. Thankfully, I have a HERO husband who is the best Daddy on the planet. He is doing as much as he can to care for the babies so I can get better fast. We are a great team and I am so glad he is my parenting team-mate! He is the best. Really.
Since I haven't really had the time or energy to type one of the posts already written in my head, here's a little re-cap of last week.

On Wednesday, My sister and her boyfriend Aaron took Brian and me to see Metallica. Which meant I was leaving the babies before bedtime. I was a little nervous but our friend JK babysat for us and she did a great job! The babies really enjoyed being with her and they went down just fine for her. I was nervous that they would give her drama at bedtime but they were great! Thank you JK!!! And OF COURSE, Thank you to Pam & Aaron for treating us to a night out!
We took a few pictures before leaving for the concert:

Me & My sister

Me with my hubby - he's so cute!

Pam & Aaron

Over the weekend, we went for a walk.

Here's Alexis in the Bjorn - her FAVORITE place to be.

My favorite men!
And then, we busted out a new hat we got for Alexis. It looked SO CUTE on her!

But the cutest and funniest part was watching everyone react to the new hat. Zachary was especially interested in ripping that thing off of her head:

I started feeling crappy a few days ago and it has definitely turned into a full blown cold. I am trying to keep the babies healthy and take good care of myself. It seems the last time I got hit with a bad cold was right after the Gavin DeGraw concert. This time, its right after the Metallica concert. HMMMMMM. Maybe I should stop going to concerts with my sister? Of course, I am kidding.
Although I am bummed to be sick, I am grateful to have Brian at home with me so I am not alone with the babies. This cold has drained all of my energy and its nice to have him here. He is my lifesaver!
Jackson has popped TWO more teeth! That makes FOUR total for Jackson.

Tooth Count:
Alexis - 0
Zachary - 8
Jackson - 4

Also, Zachary has been taking lots of steps! Jackson has pretty much stopped crawling and is serious cruising around the house. Its adorable. Jackson absolutely LOVES when we chase him. As soon as we say, "I'm gonna get you!" he starts squealing and takes off. He loves it! I've got to get Brian to post some video of it soon.

In the meantime, I've gotta go take some Nyquil.

Merry Christmas!

Warm December Afternoon

Warm December Afternoon

Brian's company's holiday party was today which meant he was home earlier than usual. Yay for me! He's been sick the past few days and today is the first day he has felt back to normal. We took advantage of having Daddy home by going on an afternoon walk.
Its supposedly December but you would have never known it by today's beautiful weather. I actually worked up a sweat on the walk! Gotta love Southern California. :)
We sat down for a quick break and I actually remembered to snap some pictures. I've been terrible about taking pictures lately!

We got home just in time for their second nap and the babies konked out. They were exhausted from the walk.

But wait...somebody woke up early and was SO LOUD, I had to go get him so he wouldn't wake up the others...OF COURSE it was Jackson!
Look at that squishy "just woke up" face.
OOPS...too late. Zachary says, "Mommy...I was sleeping and Jackson woke me up with his howling!"
Sorry baby!

Here, honey...Have a croissant.

They LOVE croissants.

Totally unrelated...Zachary has ANOTHER tooth, which makes EIGHT!
Jackson is walking like crazy. Like taking 12, 13, 14...steps at a time with no help. He is cruising around confidently now! I can't believe it!
Alexis is still toothless and she is just fine with that! My pretty girl :)

That's all! have a happy weekend! :)
